Skin Care For Your Winter Skin - Sunscreen & Moisturizer

Hey, it's Amanda again. We told you we wouldn't leave you high and dry (pun intended).  Part 2 of our winter skincare recommendations are below.  They're sure to leave your skin plump and supple and keep you from feeling the harmful effects of the elements this time of year.  Don't think that any of these recommendations are just for winter either.  It's important to make sure you take care of your skin year round and all of these products are suitable for any month.

As a reminder, here the first part of this post on cleansing and treatment products. After reading it agin, you're all set to go on to your next steps below!

Even though the sun is less powerful you still need to protect yourself.  Ultra violet rays are one of the main causes of premature aging.  While some foundations do contain some sunscreen, you should not rely on it to protect you throughout the day.  A chemical sunscreen like Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Wetforce For Face/Body will protect your face and won’t cause flashback in photos.  For touch ups throughout the day, I love the Coola Makeup Setting Spray with SPF 30.  It also contains hyaluronic acid to keep you hydrated and won’t disturb your makeup.  Supergoop also makes a sunscreen setting powder that you can use on top of your makeup if you have oily skin or just want some additional protection.

A lightweight eye cream will do wonders to reduce dry, crepey under eyes.  I use either the Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream or Mario Badescu Hyaluronic Eye Cream.  They are both lightweight enough to sit well under makeup and don’t cause concealer to crease throughout the day.  Best of all, they’re unscented and they don’t irritate my already sensitive eyes.

If your skin is super oily, you can stop right there.  Apply your makeup as you normally would and you’ll be sufficiently hydrated without feeling greasy.  If your skin is more normal to dry, you’ll want to add a moisturizer before you move on.  For normal skin types, I love the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer.  A little goes a long way, it’s very budget friendly, and lightweight enough that you won’t have to worry about being a greaseball by the end of the day. This is a staple in my kit and I use it on almost everyone.  If your skin is more dry, I’d recommend a cream like the Kiehl’s Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Cream which is a richer formula that still sits well under makeup.  This is actually my preferred night time moisturizer because of how luxurious it feels and I always wake up with my skin feeling nourished and smooth.  For extra dry skin, I like to use a drop or two of beauty oil on top of moisturizer to really seal everything in and help makeup to glide over skin.  My top pick is another from Kiehl’s; the Daily Reviving Concentrate.  I actually use this to thin out some of my more pigmented or creamy foundations because it doesn’t cause any separation or break up the makeup throughout the day.

Finally, a good lip moisturizer will sooth chapped lips and prepare them for lipstick. Though pricey, I have not found one that I love more than La Mer The Lip Balm.  By no means am I suggesting that you drop $60 on a lip balm but if you are looking to splurge on a really great lip treatment, this is one I highly suggest.  I keep one on my nightstand and one in my vanity.  Each pot lasts me about 9 months and it’s the only product that can rescue my very dry lips.  I find that I rarely have to reapply this and have even gone to bed with this on and found that it’s still there when I wake up.  My second choice is the Jack Black Lip Intense Lip Therapy.  I love that this has sunscreen in it to protect my lips and find that it is hydrating and the mint flavor is very cooling and soothing.  It comes in a bunch of different flavors and, because it’s technically a men’s lip conditioner, it’s not too shiny.

I know all of this seems like a lot of steps but in reality, it only takes 10 minutes to properly prep your skin and protect it from winter.  You’ll find that, not only does your skin look healthier and more radiant, your makeup will look better and last a lot longer.  A little self care will also give your mood a boost and give you that youthful glow that we’re all after.
